Beijing (CHN) BTG FIG Office, August 21, 2008: The average age of young women participating in Rhythmic Gymnastic competitions of the Beijing Olympic Games has increased significantly since the Athens Olympic Games in 2004. The 96 gymnasts show a total average age of 19.95 years as opposed to the 18.80 year average 4 years ago.
A progression in the age of gymnasts has been noted not only at the Olympic Games, but also in world championship events. Specialists of the discipline unanimously hail the development, knowing full well that greater maturity favours artistic and choreographic expression.
And no one’s complaining! Especially not the gymnasts who, at 20, no longer blush when asked their age!
