The 20 year-old Belarusian gymnast takes his fourth Gold medal of the day at the Apparatus Finals of the Games of the 25th Olympiad. He would take a total of 6 at the same Games in Teams, the All-around, the Parallel Bars, Pommel Horse, Rings and the Vault.
Vitaly Scherbo had become a legend.
Born on January 13, 1972 in Minsk, Vitaly owes his career as a gymnast to his mother, who signed him up for gymnasium to 'liberate and channel' her son's inexhaustible energy.
Though born with natural talent and acute intelligence, Vitaly's personality, which proved to be as strong as his physique, refused any manner of discipline while training. You can't have it all !
Nonetheless, Scherbo progressed at lightening speed, and proved his mastery at the Olympic Games in Barcelona, coached by Leonid Arkaev, a legend himself, and alongside his friends Grigori Misutin, Igor Korobchinski, Valeri Belenki, Rustam Sharipov and Alexei Voropaev.
With 6 Gold medals, Vitaly Scherbo matched Michael Phelbs' record (USA - swimming - Athens 2004). Only Mark Spitz (USA - swimming - Munich 1972) remained unparalleled with 7 Gold medals.
Today, Vitaly heads up his own training centre in the US, near Las Vegas. Take a look; he'd love to have you: http://www.vssg.net/. /phs
